    Default Suranjoy storms into finals of Presidents Cup

    Asian champion Suranjoy Singh outclassed Braulio Avila of Mexico to storm into the finals of the Presidents Cup Boxing Tournament being held at Baku, Azerbaijan.

    Suranjoy, who became the first Indian boxer to enter the finals of the prestigious event yesterday will now take on Nordine Oubaali of France in the final today.

    The Indian, who is competing for the Asia One team, beat his rival from the Americas Two team 10-4 in a one-sided encounter, the Indian Boxing Federation Secretary General PK Muralidharan Raja said in a release.

    Beijing Olympics bronze medalist Vijender Singh had bagged a Bronze Medal in the previous edition held at Taiwan in 2008.

    In an exciting semifinal encounter against Braulio Avila of America 2 (Mexico), Suranjoy who is representing Asia 1, was relentless in his fierce attacking style of play.

    Although both boxers started tentatively, Suranjoy notched up a lead of 2 points by the end of first round.

    In second round Suranjoy attacked fiercely with crisp jabs, uppercuts and straight punches which fetched him a lead of 7:2 points.

    The 22-year-old Manipuri also dominated the third round and grabbed three points against his rivals two to emerge victorius with a score of 10:4.
