    Filmmaker Priyadarshan's off-beat Tamil movie Kanchivaram was chosen as the Best Film while Adoor Gopalakrishan bagged the Best Director award for Malayalam film Naalu Pennungal making it a clean sweep for southern cinema at the 55th National Awards announced today.

    While Malayalam director Priyadarshan won his first National award for his Tamil film, revolving around the life of silk weavers of Tamil Nadu, Adoor(68) won his fifth Best Director award the story of four women struggling against inequality in Kerala.

    It is Adoor's ninth National award and his film also won best editing award for B Ajith.

    The Best Actor award and the Best Actress trophy too were bagged by south Indian artistes with Tamil actor Prakash Raaj beating off competition from Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan to bag the Best Actor award for his role in Kanchivaram.

    But the Khans were not disappointed with Aamir Khan's directorial debut Taare Zameen Par made the 'Best Family Welfare Film' and Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chak De India taking home the trophy for 'Best Overall Entertainer'.

    Raaj was named among the host of other winners of the National Film Awards announced for the year 2007 by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced here by S M Khan, director of the Directorate of Film Festivals and jury members Sai Paranjape, Ashok Viswanathan and Namita Gokhale.

    It is Raaj's third national award after Iruvar (best supporting actor in 1997) and Dhaya, which had won the special jury award in 2003.

    Actress Umashree bagged the Best Actress award for her performance in Girish Kasaravalli's Kannada film Gulabi Talkies, which depicts the transformation of the people of a small fishing village after their exposure to colour television.

    Shankar Mahadevan won the Best Playback Singer trophy for his rendition of Meri Maa in Aamir Khan directed Taare Zameen Par.

    The same song also won Prasoon Joshi, the award for Best Lyricist.

    Gandhi My Father was the only Hindi film to win three nods including Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Special Jury Award, which was shared by the director Feroz Abbas Khan and producer Anil Kapoor.

    Khan also won the award for the Best Screenplay while actor Darshan Zariwala bagged the best supporting actor award for his role as Gandhi in the movie, which revolves around the uneasy relationship that the father of the nation shared with his eldest son Harilal.

    Bhavna Talwar's directorial debut Dharm, which deals with communal harmony in the religious city of Varanasi, won the Nargis Dutt Award for best film on national integration.

    Farah Khan's directed Om Shanti Om bagged the best art direction award for Sabu Cyril while choreographer Saroj Khan won an award for the song 'Yeh Ishk Hai' in Jab We Met.

    Best Supporting Actress award went to Shefali Shah for herher performance in The Last Lear.

    Best Child Actor award went to Sharad Goekar for his role in the Marathi film Tingya.

    The Indira Gandhi Award for best first film of a director went to Shivajee Chandrabhushan for Frozen, which also won the best cinematography award.

    Foto (Hindi) won the best children's film award, while Inimey Naangathaan (Tamil) won the best animation film award.

    Hindi film 1971 won the best audiography award and it also won the award for best film in Hindi under the language specified in schedule VIII of the Constitution category.

    In the same category, Bengali film Ballygunge Court won the best film award, while Gulabi Talkies was named the best Kannada film.

    Ore Kadal won the best Malayalam film, Nirop won the award for best film in Marathi. Periyar got the award for Tamil, while 'The Last Lear' won the award for being the best film in English.

    Rajnikanth starrer Shivaji: The Boss won a award for best 'Special Effect'.

    The winners were selected from among 102 films and 106 non-feature films.
