If there is one director who has singlehandedly changed the course of Abhishek Bachchan’s career, it’s got to be Mani Ratnam. Just about the time when Abhishek was beginning to get dubbed as a ‘dark horse’ (following continuous failure at the start of his career), Mani gave him the role of hot-headed goon in his film Yuva. That role and Abhi’s performance silenced his critics and brought to the fore the actor’s potential.

Mani’s second stroke of genius with Abhi came in Guru, a movie which won many a heart. And now that the duo completes a hat-trick with Raavan, Ratnam is all praise for Abhishek.

“Every time I worked with him, he had drastically different characters and each time he delivered. He is tremendous to work with. Abhishek is growing with every film. He is growing by leaps and bounds,” Ratnam is quoted as saying by a news agency.

Talking about Raavan, the director said Abhi plays a larger-than-life character in the movie.

“In this film (Raavan), his character is much larger than life - it needed a bigger portrayal, flamboyance. He has been able to do it much convincingly,” Ratnam said.

The 54-year-old director who is almost revered by the Indian film industry said quite self-effacingly that he still struggles when it comes to directing films.

“I still struggle, but the most enjoyable part is not knowing and trying to find something,” said Ratnam who has directed more than 20 films in his career.
