Default Delhi has a lot of drama: Sonam

Delhi has many stories to tell. More than Mumbai... there are a lot of real people here.

Mumbai’s influenced a lot by Bollywood, but Delhi has high society and politicians. There’s a lot of drama here as well. I don’t know, but Delhi draws me to itself,” says Sonam Kapoor, after packing up a hectic shooting schedule in the city.

She’s more than eager to talk about Aisha Kapoor, her character in Aisha, which is based on Jane Austen’s Emma. “There’s Abhay Deol, who plays Mr Knightley’s character, and Vidushi Mehra’s playing my sister,” says Sonam. “I read quite a bit of Jane Austen and I feel that every young girl at one point or another would’ve had a favourite Austen novel. Aisha is based a lot on the book. Here in Delhi high society, it’s all about who you marry, how your wedding should be the best and how you should find the perfect man,” she adds.

And is that what every girl wants? “Yes, every girl wants a perfect wedding. We want the perfect man. But the perfect man is not necessarily the perfect man for you on paper; maybe, a girl and boy may not be so amazing together. Aisha doesn’t know that. Emma as a character didn’t know that and she tried to control everything and everybody, she thought that a puzzle should always fit perfectly. But she didn’t know that life’s not a puzzle; it’s a series of mish-mashes that makes it so beautiful,” she says.

A lot is being said about Bittu’s (Sonam’s character in Delhi-6) transformation to the uber sophisticated Aisha Kapoor. “Bittu was a girl and Aisha is a child-woman. Bittu was from Old Delhi and the lower middle class. Aisha’s from New Delhi, she lives near

Aurangzeb Road, she might have a farmhouse in Chattarpur. Her dad will have an old Mercedes, and she likes to wear her mom’s old pearls and carry her vintage bags. She’s very classy, sophisticated and intelligent. She’s slightly spoilt. It’s fun playing this character,” explains Sonam.

Tell Sonam that her essaying Emma will bring her under the scanner of literature lovers, and she squeals in delight. “That was my main aim because I’m a literature aficionado too. But people should know that we’re not setting the film in Victorian England. We’re adapting it as beautifully as we can to New Delhi and we’re trying to make Mr Knightley and Emma as contemporary as we can,” she says.

Sonam also says that she’s been listening to Rihanna, Beyonce and Lady GaGa to “get into the mood”. “Yes, I’ve been listening to Paparazzi, Let’s Dance and Lady GaGa. Aisha’s a modern girl, right?” Her dad Anil Kapoor, however, is not acting in the film. “He’s only the producer as of now,” adds Sonam.
