2010 Winter Olympics brand ambassador Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, unable to complete his stint as a torch-bearer in the wake of protests, returned from Canada last night.

'I had the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch in Canada.

It was indeed a proud moment,' Akshay said on his return.

Akshay was one of the 14 torch-bearers for the Winter Olympics which will be held in Vancouver between February 12-28 and his involvement was announced by the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper during his two-day India visit.

However, Akshay had to return as protesters accused the government of ignoring native Indians.

The 42-year-old actor helped carry the Olympic flame to Toronto on December 17 but could not finish his 300-metre run as protesters blocked the street. Hundreds of policemen intervened to remove the agitators who kept shouting slogans of 'No Olympics', against the holding of the sports extravaganza on lands taken away from the original natives of Canada.

Akshay carrying the flame in downtown Toronto was part of a USD 26 million strategy by the Canadian government to leverage tourism opportunities presented by the Vancouver Games.
